Hydrolysis

No experimental results are available for the abiotic degradation of Montan waxes. As the substances are very poorly soluble in water, studies on hydrolysis as a function of pH could not be expected to yield any reasonable information and were therefore not conducted (waiving according to Annex XI of REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006). Based on the same reason (insolubility in water), hydrolysis will be no relevant degradation pathway.

 

Biodegradation

Ready biodegradation

Some biodegradation was observed at least for some of the category members: two from six tested category members are inherently biodegradable and another three may be regarded as inherently primary biodegradable. In summary, in reliable studies members of the category of montan waxes proved to be not readily biodegradable, but are not very persistent in the environment.

 

Transport and distribution

Adsorption / desorption

Due to log Pow values well below 3, no testing of adsorption-desorption behaviour of the members of the Montan waxes category is required according to column 2 of Annex VIII and Annex IX of REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006. An adsorption/desorption screening test according to OECD 121 could not be expected to yield any reasonable information.

Therefore, no conclusion on adsorption/desorption behaviour of the Montan waxes category is possible from experimental data. Based on the low log Pow-values, no relevant adsorption to soil, sludge or sediment is expected.
