Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data

Endpoint:
boiling point
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid which decomposes before boiling
Justification for type of information:
In a differential scanning calorimetry study according to OECD Test Guideline 102 and EU test method A.1, no melting point but decomposition was observed.
Cross-reference
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Reference
Endpoint:
melting point/freezing point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2015-09-07 to 2015-09-11
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 102 (Melting point / Melting Range)
Version / remarks:
adopted on 27 July 1995
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.1 (Melting / Freezing Temperature)
Version / remarks:
(EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
differential scanning calorimetry
Specific details on test material used for the study:
A reserve sample of the batch of the test item used for the study was taken and is stored in the substance archives of the test facility according to the GLP guidelines.
Key result
Decomposition:
yes
Decomp. temp.:
> 430 °C
Remarks on result:
not determinable
Remarks:
no melting but decomposition of the test item. Decomposition temperature from reading of thermogravimetric curve. Atmospheric pressure not recorded.

A preliminary thermogravimetric measurement was performed over a temperature range from room temperature to approx. 600 °C. One mass loss step was registered with a total mass loss of 5.0 %, including the mass loss during initial purging with nitrogen (0.5 %). The course of the thermographic curve indicates no melting but decomposition of the test item. The residue looked dark-grey incrusted; the crucible material was affected inside as well as outside.

Due to the strong reaction of the test item during the thermogravimetric measurement, only one DSC measurement was performed in the temperature range from 20 - 600 °C. The course of the heat flow curves confirmed the results of the thermogravimetric measurement. No sharp endothermic peak indicating a melting point could be observed.

Reweighing after the measurement showed that the sample had lost approx. 4.9 % of its mass. The remaining residue looked grey. Again, the crucible material was affected inside as well as outside.

Decomposition temperature >430 °C from reading of thermogravimetric curve.

Conclusions:
Potassium hexafluorophosphate: no melting point but decomposition was observed (estimation >430 °C).
Executive summary:

A preliminary thermogravimetric measurement and a differential scanning calorimetry measurement of potassium hexafluorophosphate revealed that no sharp endothermic peak indicating a melting point could be observed. No melting but decomposition of the test item occurred at >430 °C (estimation from thermogravimetric curve).
