Additional information

Phenol proved to be readily biodegradable in waste water, freshwater, sea water, and at anaerobic conditions with inoculum from activated sludge.


The lowest acute EC/LC50 value in aquatic tests is the EC50 of 3.1 mg/L, based on measured initial concentrations, obtained in a static 48-h acute toxicity test with Ceriodaphnia dubia (Oris et al. 1991). The lowest reliable long-term effect value in aquatic studies is the NOEC of 77 µg/L, based on nominal concentrations, obtained in a 60 day study with larvae of Cirrhina mrigala.
