Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

APPEARANCE AND PHYSICOCHEMICAL STATE
Direct Red 253 is a dark brown/purple organic powder at 20 °C and 1013 hPa; it is primarily marketed/used in a non-solid or granular form.
The Differential Scanning Analysis Calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that the substance decomposes before melting/boiling at 240 - 360 °C (Svobodová, 2016). Based on estimated value, the vapour pressure is expected to be negligible (i.e. 7.4E-034 Pa at 25 °C).
SOLUBILITY AND PARTITION COEFFICIENT
The solubility in water has been assayed using the shake flask method; it was not possible to determine absolute water solubility of test substance in water by flask method due to the high viscosity of saturated solution. Expected solubility in water should be between 400 - 500 g/l (Svobodová, 2016)
Partition coefficient was determined by means of shake flask method as per recommendations of OECD 107. The study was conducted at 23 °C and the log Pow resulted -1.98 at pH 6.5 (Havránková, 2016), confirming that the substance has higher affinity with the water phase than the octanol one.
PHYSICAL HAZARDS
The relative self-ignition temperature for Direct Red 253 has been determined to be 359.5 °C (Svobodová, 2016).
The substance does not ignite and not propagate combustion neither by burning with flame or by smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 4 -minute test period (Svobodová, 2016).
On the basis of its chemical structure, the substance is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials. Regarding explosiveness, the screening procedure failed to evidence any reason for concern, on the basis that the enthalpy of decomposition (less than 500 J/g) of Direct Red 253 at 298.70 °C.
The substance does not meet the criteria to be considered as flammable/explosive/oxidising.
