No studies investigating the toxicity to microorganisms of sorbitan C16-18 (even numbered) fatty acid esters, ethoxylated (1-6.5 moles ethoxylated) are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across was conducted to the structurally related substances (CAS 1338-39-2).
This study investigates as a limit test the toxicity of sorbitan laurate (CAS 1338-39-2) to microorganisms according to the OECD guideline 209 and GLP (Desmares-Koopmans, 2010). Activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage was exposed to 100 mg/L test item for 3 h. No effect on the respiration rate of the activated sludge was observed.
Based on these results of the structurally related read across substance no toxicity to microorganisms is expected for sorbitan C16-18 (even numbered) fatty acid esters, ethoxylated (1-6.5 moles ethoxylated) up to 100 mg test substance/L.
