Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In vivo, isobutyl-R-lacate is rapidly hydrolysed enzymatically. Therefore, the toxicologically relevant compounds following systemic uptake are lactic acid/lactate (low toxicological concern) and isobutanol.

Additional information

Isobutyl-R-lactate, as all lactate esters, is rapidly hydrolysed in vivo into lactic acid and isobutanol.

Lactic acid is a ubiquitous and essential biological molecule, in humans and other mammals, but also in most if not all vertebrate and invertebrate animals, as well as in many micro-organisms. Therefore the biokinetics, metabolism and distribution of lactic acid have to be considered in the context of its normal biochemistry; lactic acid is of minor toxicological concern given its ubitquitousness and function as a common metabolite.

Isobutanol is an alcohol that is metabolised by the normal alcohol metabolism pathways.
