Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Based on the available data the effects on terrestrial organisms have been determined from a structural analogue of the substance, EDTA in its acid form and its salts. For justification for read-across see IUCLID 5, Chapter 13.

Only one acute toxicity study with earthworms is available for EDTA-H4 (Edwards, 2009). The EC50 was determined at 156 mg/kg soil dry weight. This corresponds to 148 mg/kg soil dw H3HEDTA.

Two acceptable studies with EDTA salts or complexes have been performed, examining different end-points (vegetative vigour and seedling emergence) in different plant species. In the 21d veg vigour study (Evangelou et al., 2006) a true NOEC could be established, while in the 14d seedling emergence test (Geebelen et al., 2002) no effect was observed at the highest tested dose. Recalculation of the NOEC from EDTA-Na2H2 to HEDTA-H3 will give a NOEC of 69 mg/kg soil dw.

Due to the Koc, water solubility and the hydrophilic character of the substance, binding to the solid soil phase may be regarded as negligible. Hence HEDTA is expected to be found in the pore water rather than bound to soil.
