Description of key information
There are two short-term terrestrial ecotoxicity tests available for EDTA-CuK2.
One acute toxicity study with earthworms is available for EDTA-CuK2 (Winkelmann, 2019). The EC50 for weight was determined to be 754 (394 - 1401) mg test item/kg dw (=693.7 mg a.i./kg dw). The LC50 for mortality is 1018 (756 - 1703) mg test item/kg dw (= 936.6 mg a.i./kg dw).
The effect data based on active are then: EC50 for weight 693.7 mg a.i./kg dw. The EC50 for mortality is 936.6 mg a.i./kg dw
One toxicity to terrestrial plant tests is performed with EDTA-CuK2 according to OECD 208 (Winkelmann, 2019) using three different plant species. the lowest NOEC of 160 mg test item/kg dw was observed for the growth, shootheight and shoot wet weight of Brassica napus (rape). The lowest EC50 of 225 mg test item/kg dw was observed for the number of emerged seedlings for Glycine max (soybean). The test item contained 92% active ingredient. The effect data based on active are then: NOEC of 147.2 mg a.i./kg dw was observed for the growth, shootheight and shoot wet weight of Brassica napus (rape). The lowest EC50 of 207 mg a.i./kg dw
Because of the availability of the two Klimish 1 short-term toxicity studies with EDTA-CuK2, the results as observed in literature e.g. in the studies from Evangelou et al (NOEC of 107.4 mg/L expressed as EDTA-CuK2, 21d veg. vigour study 2006 with EDTA-Na2H2) and Geebelen et al (no effect observed at the highest tested dose NOEC > 58.4 mg/kg soil dw H4-EDTA) were not considered for the evaluation of the terrestrial effect assessment of EDTA-CuK2.
Additional information
Several other studies investigating terrestrial toxicity have been performed.
Only one acute toxicity study with earthworms is available for EDTA-H4 (Edwards, 2009). The EC50 was determined at 156 mg/kg soil dry weight. This corresponds to 230 mg/kg soil dw EDTA-CuK2.
Two acceptable studies with EDTA salts or complexes have been performed, examining different end-points (vegetative vigour and seedling emergence) in different plant species. In the 21d veg vigour study (Evangelou et al., 2006) a true NOEC could be established, while in the 14d seedling emergence test (Geebelen et al., 2002) no effect was observed at the highest tested dose (> 58.4 mg/kg soil dw H4-EDTA).
Recalculation of the NOEC from EDTA-Na2H2 to EDTA-CuK2 will give a NOEC of 107.4 mg/kg soil dw.
The hazard assessment of EDTA-FeK reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous to the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance. The substance is expected to have a low potential for adsorption based on its ionic structure under environmental relevant pH conditions and its low log Kow , the low log Kow also indicates that the substance will not be bioaccumulative. There are no further indications that the substance may be hazardous to the environment.
