The environmental fate and behaviour of the registered substance was determined via an expert examination of the hydrolysis of its constituents which concluded that Cordierite, sintered, synthetic is hydrolytically stable. Since the substance is inorganic the concept of biodegradation is irrelevant. The study of the solubility of Cordierite has shown dissolution of surface ions which are not further degradable which indicate that there is “no need to investigate further the degradation of the substance and its degradation products". Similarly, Bioaccumulation is a concept that does not apply to the hazard assessment of inorganic substances. In water Cordierite dissociates in ions which are found naturally in the water and that are not deemed to be bioaccumulative. The determination of Koc and Kow, is not technically possible. The required test methods are not applicable to molecules which dissociate. Following dissociation in water, resultant ions are expected to undergo ion exchange within the soil and water. Therefore, this endpoint is not relevant for inorganic substances that dissociate.
