Description of key information

The method followed the recommendations of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1992) No 203 "Fish, Acute Toxicity Test" referenced as Method C.1 of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC (which constitutes Annex V of Council Directive 67/548/EEC).
The acute toxicity of the test material to the freshwater fish rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) has been investigated and gave a 96-Hour LL50* value of greater than 1000 mg/l loading rate WAF. Correspondingly the No Observed Effect Loading rate was 1000 mg/l loading rate WAF.

Introduction:

A study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of the test material to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The method followed that described in the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1992) No 203, "Fish, Acute Toxicity Test" referenced as Method C.1 of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC (which constitutes Annex V of Council Directive 67/548/EEC).

Methods:

Following a preliminary range-finding test, fish were exposed, in groups of seven, to Water Accommodated Fractions (WAFs) of the test material, at a single nominal loading rate of 1000 mg/l for a period of 96 hours at a temperature of approximately 14°C under semi-static test conditions. The number of mortalities and any sub-lethal effects of exposure in each test and control vessel were determined 3 and 6 hours after the start of exposure and then daily throughout the test until termination after 96 hours.

Results:

The 96-Hour LL50*based on nominal loading rates was  greater than 1000 mg/l loading rate WAF and correspondingly the No Observed Effect Loading rate was 1000 mg/l loading rate WAF.

The test was conducted at a loading rate of 1000 mg/l rather than 100 mg/l in error, however, this was considered not to have affected the outcome of the study as no adverse effects of exposure were observed throughout the study at the higher concentration used.

Analysis of samples taken throughout the test showed measured test concentrations of less than the limit of quantitation (LOQ) (which was assessed down to 0.0052 mg/l) to 0.0534 mg/l.

Given that toxicity cannot be attributed to a single component or a mixture of components but to the test material as a whole, and the dissolved test material concentration was very low, the results were based on nominal loading rates only.
