FAT 40543/A was tested for ready and inherent biodegradability as follows:

The ready biodegradability of FAT 40543/A was determined in a 28 days "Manometric Respirometry Test" according to the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals, No. 301F.

The test substance was tested in a concentration of 100 mg/l. The reference substance (sodium benzoate) was also tested in a concentration of 100 mg/l. Whereas the reference substance reached a biodegradation rate of 90% showing the test system to be efficient, the test substance FAT 40543/A only achieved 2% biodegradation after 28 days.

The inherent biodegradability of FAT 40543/A was determined in a 28 days MITI (II) - Test according to the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals, No. 302C. The test substance was tested in a concentration of 30 mg/l and showed no biodegradation (0%) within 28 days. The reference substance (sodium benzoate) was tested in a concentration of 100 mg/l and achieved 89% biodegradation within 28 days.

In a separate experiment the COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) of FAT 40543/A was determined being 1.25 g O2/g and is thus in good agreement with the ThOD (Theoretical Oxygen Demand) of 1.33 g O2/g. Considering the BOD5 of 5 mg O2/g found in the ready biodegradability test (Manometric respirometry test) the BOD5/COD ratio is 0.4% and thus the substance is considered non-biodegradable

In conclusion it can be stated that FAT 40543/A is non-biodegradable under aerobic conditions.
