Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: GLP guideline study
Qualifier:
no guideline required
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The appearance of the test material was determined by visual assessment.
An aliquot of the test material was transferred to a clear glass vessel, equilibrated to 20 ± 0.5 °C and visually inspected under natural light on a white background.

Conclusions:
The appearance of the test material has been visually assessed as a fine white powder which tends to form clumps, at 20 ± 0.5 °C.

Description of key information

According to a GLP compliant study report, supported by reliable handbook data, calcium oxide is a beige or grey-white powder at room temperature.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Physical state at 20°C and 1013 hPa:
solid

Additional information

For the evaluation of this endpoint, the result of a GLP compliant study report was used as key information supported by reliable handbook data.Since the study was conducted with a sample representative of the substance to be registered, this was considered the most reliable data to represent calcium oxide. Based on available data, calcium carbonate is a white powder or colourless crystals, and itmay be expected that grades of calcium oxide with up to 35% calcium carbonate will be of similar appearance to that described in the key study.
