Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
particle size distribution (granulometry)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
03rd July 2009 to 01st Devember 2009
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: Standard Operating Procedure 060118.01 of Fraunhofer ITEM
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The standard procedure at Fraunhofer ITEM (direct method) was compared for some fibre samples to the line intercept method in previous studies. The resulting length weighted diameter distribution was not different between both methods
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
determination of fibre length and diameter distributions
Type of particle tested:
primary particle
Type of distribution:
counted distribution
Percentile:
D50
Remarks on result:
other: Not a relevant descriptor for fibres as length contributes to mass but barely to aerodynamic diameter (migrated from fields under 'Mass median diameter' as D50 percentile. No source field for Standard deviation.)
Percentile:
other: D1
Mean:
> 0.15 - < 0.64 µm
Remarks on result:
other: Fibre diameter
Percentile:
D10
Mean:
> 0.61 - < 1.97 µm
Remarks on result:
other: fibre diameter
Percentile:
D50
Mean:
> 2.19 - < 5.95 µm
Remarks on result:
other: Fibre diameter
Percentile:
D90
Mean:
> 5.34 - < 13.78 µm
Remarks on result:
other: fibre diameter

Conclusions:
Products contain a very low proportion of nano fibres,
the arithmetic mean of the fibre diameter is greater than 2.5 microns.
Executive summary:

The material as sold consists of entangled fibres forming a wool. The length of these fibres is indeterminate and the product can be described entirely by the fibre diameter distribution , which is provided within this dossier

Description of key information

The arithmetic mean of the fibre diameter is greater than 2.5 microns.

Additional information

Products do not contain nano fibres, with <1% of the total fibre length having a diameter of less than 150 nanometres and the arithmetic mean of the fibre diameter is greater than 2.5 microns.
