Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Compared to nBMA, i-BMA has a very similar ecotoxicological profile (fish acute, invertebrate acute, algae acute and chronic) and by virtue of having almost identical physicochemical properties and metabolism is predicted to be comparable to n-BMA in ecotoxicological QSARs for methacrylate esters. Here also the current PNEC is likely to provide a more conservative margin of safety and further testing is unlikely to provide a higher level of protection.

Additional information

The CSA can be performed without a chronic fish study. With the available information the resulting PNEC is high enough so that the CSA could be concluded successfully. From the available acute data for this substance and the chronic data that is available, for all 3 trophic levels, for the close structural analogue (MMA) and the primary metabolite (MAA) there is no indication that fish are any more sensitive than aquatic invertebrates and algae to this substance (Staples et al., 2009). Therefore, performing the chronic fish study, a vertebrate study falling under the animal protection legislation of the EU (86/609/EEC), is unjustified.
