Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Existing data indicate that hydrolysis is negligible with regard to the environmental degradation of chloroform. For the risk assessment no hydrolysis will be taken into account.

Additional information

The rate constant for hydrolysis of chloroform was measured at different pH values. Jeffers et al. (1989) found a half-life of 1850 years at 25 °C after 14 months at a neutral pH value 7. The half-life reported by Washington (1995) for similar conditions is 1760 years. Hydrolysis half-lives for chloroform increase with decreasing temperature or pH value (Washington 1995). The half-life for hydrolysis of chloroform at 20 °C and pH 7 was given with 3500 years (Mabey and Mill 1978). From the available data it can be concluded that hydrolysis is not important with regard to the degradation of chloroform under environmental conditions.
