Additional information

According to the Regulation (REACH Annex VII Section 8.5 Column 2) a study on acute toxicity does not need to be conducted if the substance is classified as corrosive to the skin. Data for the inhalatory route in rats is available from literature (OECD SIDS on Tin tetrachloride, SIAM 24, 2007). The observed toxicity is expected to be due to the formation of HCl during hydrolysis in the lung. The LC50 value of tin tetrachloride vapor is comparable to that of gaseous hydrogen chloride. Neverthelessthe vapor pressure of tin tetrachloride at 20 °C is 20.7 hPa and therefore even lower than that of concentrated aquaeous hydrochloric acid (33% HCL: 212 hPa, data from ESIS IUCLID file) that is not classified for acute toxicity. Therefore it seems to be reasonalbe to follow the current EU legal classification that does not classify tetrachloride for this endpoint. Despite of this, classification as respiratory irritant is indicated.
