Description of key information

No direct information is available on clinical cases or poisoning incidents with SMCA. However, based on the fact that udner physiological conditions both SMCA and MCAA are completely ionized, with the chloroacetate ion as the active moiety, risk assessment is based on the oral toxicity data for MCAA.  One case of oral consumption of MCAA is described

No relationship between estimated MCAA consumption from chlorinated drinking water and the occurence of hypospadia.  Klimisch 4

clinical observation: negative for cross-allergy between ethylester of MCAA and MCAA itself.

Additional information

No relationship between occurence of hypospadia and maternal exposure to estimated drinking water contamination with haloacetic acids. In view of the serious limitations and confounders in this study, the negative result is meaningless.

Data from dermal contamination with MCAA is not applicable to SMCA in view of the much lower skin absorption.

The clinical case describing a fatality after xonsumption of ~75 ml MCAA is relevant for SMCA
