Conclusion on classification

Three aquatic toxicity studies have been conducted according to GLP and OECD guidelines, these studies have been conducted on Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout), Daphnia magna (water flea) and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (green algae). All three studies were conducted on a closely related structural surrogate sodium glucoheptonate.

The structural surrogate is considered to be sufficiently similar to the substance of interest (please see attached data matrix and justification in Section 13 for additional details) for it to be used for the purposes of health and environment risk assessments.

An ASRI study was also conducted on the test material Sodium d-glycero-d-gulo-heptonate, the EC50 value was greater than 1000 mg/L and the NOEC was determined to be 1000 mg/L as no effects were observed within the study.

The results of these studies were not sufficient to warrent classification as all EC/LC50 values are greater than the criteria for classification (<100 mg/l) at >1000 mg/l, plus the test material is readily biodegradale in water.

Therefore the test material sodium d-glycero-d-gulo-heptonate has not been classified as hazardous to the environment.
