Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

As Silicic acid, calcium salt is inorganic, the equilibrium partitioning method using PNECaqua cannot be applied. However, testing is not possible as the substance in contact with water will decompose for a small part inCa2+and SiO32-ions, the latter converting to the solid SiO2. In the solubility study it is shown that, as a result, the pH will increase to pH > 10, which is an inadequate environment for the test animal in soil. Testing this substance will be testing a pH effect, not the toxicity of the substance itself. Adjusting the pH will result in more substance to be dissolved, which is not a realistic reflection of the toxicity of the substance. Therefore a waiver is requested for the terrestrial endpoints.

Concerning the toxicity to birds, an inhalation study with different CaSiO4 insulation materials is available, in which rats are exposed to dust of these materials for 1 year at a concentration of 10 mg/m3 (respirable dust). No major pulmonary damage was detected. Long-term repeated dose studies and reproduction studies with rats are proposed as part of the registration testing program. Therefore a waiver is considered justified for the study with birds.
