Short term tests with species of three trophic levels are available. Aquatic invertebrates and fish were the most sensitive species, with acute toxicity values (L(E)C50) of 5.04 mg/L and 4.6 mg/L, respectively. Short term effects of the substance towards algae was markedly higher, showing an EC50 (72h) of > 100 mg/L.

A chronic test on aquatic invertebrates resulted in a NOEC for reproduction of 4 mg/L. Reliable chronic data on fish are not available for this substance, however the risk characterization ratio (RCR) has demonstrated that there is no indication of risk i.e. PEC/PNEC freshwater < 1 from current exposure conditions to this substance.

Based on a respiration inhibition test, Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is regarded as not harmful to aquatic microorganisms. Consequently a disturbance in the biodegradation process of a sewage treatment plant is not anticipated for this substance, which is also supported by the ready biodegradability.
