The partition coefficient determined for each sample is shown in the following table:

Sample Number  N-octanol/Water Volume Ratio  Partition Coefficient  Log10 Pow  Mean Partition Coefficient
1 & 2  4:1 6.02 x 10 -4 (1) 3.99 x 10 -4 (2)  -3.22 (1) -3.40 (2)  5.00 x 10 -4

Mean Pow : 6.96 x 10-4, log10 Pow 3.16 Pow standard deviation : 1.9 1 x 10 -4

Linearities of the detector response with respect to concentration were assessed over the nominal concentration range of 0 to 2 mg/l for the organic phase and 0 to 300 mgll for the aqueous phase.

These were satisfactory with correlation coefficients of 1.000 and 0.999 being obtained.

Discussion

Substances having a log10 Pow of greater than 3 are regarded as having the potential to bioaccumulate in the environment.

It is evident from the information obtained in the hydrolysis test and data relating to the pH of the test material in water that negligible hydrolysis of the sample solutions occurred during the course of the partition coefficient test.

The n-octanol saturated water was adjusted to pH 7. Testing at neutral pH by the flask method is the preferred choice for test materials that are salts.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The partition coefficient of the test material has been determined to be 6.96 x l0-4 at 21.6°C +/- 0.5°C. The log10 Pow = - 3.16.
