Two studies are available on the short-term toxicity of Fatty acids, C14-18 and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, esters with neopentyl glycol (CAS No. 85005-25-0) to aquatic invertebrates.

The key study conducted with Fatty acids, C14-18 and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, esters with neopentyl glycol (CAS No. 85005-25-0) was performed according to OECD Guideline 202 (Craig, 2004). The test organism Daphnia magna was exposed to the test substance in a static system for 48 hours, at the nominal test concentrations of 125, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/L. The test solutions were prepared as water accommodated fractions. No immobilisation was observed, and the LC50 was reported to be > 2000 mg/L.

The disregarded study carried out with Fatty acids, C14-18 and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, esters with neopentyl glycol (CAS No. 85005-25-0) was conducted according to OECD Guideline 202 (Marshall, 1992). The test organism Daphnia magna was exposed to dispersions of the test substance in a semi-static system, at the nominal concentrations of 1, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L. An EC50 of 17.4 mg/L was derived. As a dispersion was tested, and no measured were taken to dissolve the substance into the test solution and to remove undissolved test material, this test is not considered reliable for the assessment of toxicity. Since in the key study, where WAFs were used, no effects were observed, the immobilisation in this study is assumed to be caused by undissolved fine particles of the dispersion.

As it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in section 13 and the overall endpoint summary IUCLID 6.1, all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results, i.e. no toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility.
