Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The short-term toxicity to algae of 2,3 -Butanediol was assessed using data of the structural analogous substance 1,4-Butanediol. The test has been performed according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412. The study has yielded EC50 values of >500 mg/L and and an EC10 value of >76 mg/L (BASF 1989). These data indicate that 2,3 -Butanediol exhibits a low order of toxicity to aquatic algae.

The read-across is valid as both substances are readily biodegradable and they reveal a low toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. Furthermore, their molecular strcuture is comparable.
