In an air atmosphere, the maximum burning rate was measured for the 10/90 (w/w) test substance/cellulose mixture: 0.84
mm/s. This is slightly higher than the maximum burning rate for the reference substance (0.80 mm/s). Because this result
was suspected to be false positive, additional tests were performed.

Test in inert atmosphere

An attempt was made to ignite the 70/30 (w/w) barium nitrate/cellulose pile using an electronic ignition source in a nitrogen atmosphere (oxygen content < 2%). Since the pile could not be ignited under these conditions, the test was repeated under an atmosphere containing approximately 10% oxygen (the atmosphere was generated by using a 1:1 mixture of air and pure nitrogen). The pile could not be ignited under these conditions. Thereafter, the oxygen content was increased until the pile ignited. The pile burned for about 5 seconds with a yellow/green flame and emitted sparks. Grey smoke was observed after the flame extinguished.

 

The test substance/cellulose mixture (10/90 (w/w)) could not be ignited using an electronic ignition source in a nitrogen atmosphere and in an atmosphere containing approximately 10% oxygen. The pile could neither be ignited when the oxygen content was increased to a value at which the 70/30 (w/w) barium nitrate/cellulose mixture was capable to cause a burning reaction. Based on this, it was concluded that the test substance has no oxidizing properties.

Based on the results of both tests and on the difference in burning behaviour, it was concluded that TC4ASO2 has no oxidizing properties in the sense that it cannot sustain a reaction with cellulose at a burning rate higher than that of a reference mixture or stimulate combustion of cellulose through a mechanism as found characteristic for substances having oxidizing properties.
