Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Non flammable upon ignition.   The substance has no pyrophoric properties and does not liberate flammable gases on contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Not readily combustible. Based on chemical structure pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water are not predicted.

Justification for classification or non-classification

1,4-Butynediol (B3D) is a solid with a melting point of 56 °C. As such, the primary values for ease of ignition are ignitability of the solid in direct contact with flame and the substance’s flash point temperature. Based on available test data, B3D does not readily propagate flame or rapidly combust and has a measured flash point of approximately 136 - 152 °C and is, therefore regarded as a Class IIIB combustible liquid. Based on chemical structure and experience in handling, pyrophoricity or water reactivity is not to be expected. Based on this information, B3D does not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 or Directive 67/548/EEC for flammability, pyrophoricity, or water reactivity.
