Description of key information

A long-term toxicity study to rainbow trout has not been carried out on Synthetic Wollastonite or the read-across material Soda-ash flux calcined kieselghur. 


According to Annex IX, section 9.1.6, column 2 of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, long term toxicity testing shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.


A study has not been conducted on Synthetic wollastonite as the substance is considered to have no or very low toxicity based on a number of studies.


Testing was carried out on the read-across material Kieselguhr soda ash flux calcined at 3 trophic levels (algae, daphnia and fish) in reliable OECD guideline studies. In each study the L(E)C50s were greater than the solubility of the substance (ie 100% v/v saturated solution).


Finally, Synthetic wollastonite is poorly soluble in water and consists of amorphous and crystalline silica which naturally occur in water bodies. Long-term toxic effects are not expected and therefore the study is considered to be scientifically unjustified.
