Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The outcome of the  BIOWIN program results in the conclusion that bromoacetic acid is readily biodegradable. As usual for an acid halide, bromoacetyl bromide hydrolyzes rapidly in water, forming bromoacetic acid and hydrobromic acid. Therfore, biodegradation data for bromoacetic acid sufficiently provides information for the biodegradability of bromoacetyl bromide as well.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable
Type of water:
freshwater

Additional information

The outcome of the  BIOWIN program results in the conclusion that bromoacetic acid is readily degradable. This conclusion is supported by data from Reach dossiers for 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide (CAS 20769-85-1), chloroacetyl chloride (CAS 79-04-9 and bromoacetic acid (CAS 79-08-3).
