Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

EC50 (14d) = 27.7 mg/kg soil dw for Brassica napus; NOEC (14d) = 14.6 mg/kg soil dw for Avena sativa (OECD 208)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Short-term EC50 or LC50 for terrestrial plants:
27.7 mg/kg soil dw
Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for terrestrial plants:
14.6 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

No studies are available for the toxicity of the reaction mass to terrestrial plants. Therefore, data for one of the four m-cresol components of the reaction mass, 4-chloro-m-cresol (CAS No. 59-50-7), are used as read across. Following OECD guideline 208 and GLP, the effect of the substance on seedling emergence and seedling growth of three different plant species was tested (Buetzler and Meinerling, 2007). The reported EC50 (14d) values are 27.7 mg/kg soil dw for rape (Brassica napus), 62.4 mg/kg soil dw for soy (Glycine max) and 30.3 mg/kg soil dw for oat (Avena sativa). The reported NOEC values are 15 mg/kg soil dw for B. napus and G. max and for A. sativa a LOEC of 15 mg/kg soil dw (NOEC < 15 mg/kg soil dw) was determined. Data obtained from the plant toxicity study can be used as estimate of chronic toxicity, since it is a test on seedling emergence and seedling growth (OECD TG 208) and therefore it is assumed to cover a sensitive stage in the life-cycle of a plant. Therefore, A. sativa is considered the most sensitive species with respect to chronic toxicity. According to the TGD for Risk Assessment (European Commission, 2003), the LOEC can be used to derive a NOEC, if the LOEC has an effect of > 10 and < 20%. Following the guideline, a NOEC of 7.5 mg/kg soil dw is calculated for A. sativa for the soil type used. According to the TGD where for non-ionic compounds it is assumed that bioavailability is determined by the organic matter content only, this value is converted to a standard soil yielding a standardized NOEC of 14.6 mg/kg soil dw. This standardized NOEC value of 14.6 mg/kg soil dw is used for PNEC derivation.
