The acute toxicity of Tetramethylbisphenol A (TMBPA) to the fathead minnow,Pimephales promelas, was determined in a 96-hour acute toxicity study conducted from June 2 to June 7, 2008, at Wildlife International, Ltd, MD, USA. The study was conducted in compliance with OECD and US EPA (40 CFR Parts 160 and 792) GLPs and according to OECD Guideline 203 (1992) and OPPTS 850.1075 (1996).

 

The test was performed under static conditions with a control, a solvent control (0.10 mL/L dimethylformamide), and five concentrations of test substance at temperature of 21.6 to 22.5°C. The dilution water was filtered fresh water obtained from a well approximately 40 meters deep located on the Wildlife International, Ltd. Site with a hardness of 144 mg/L as CaCO3 at study start. Nominal concentrations of TMBPA were: 0 mg/L (control and solvent control), 0.13, 0.22, 0.36, 0.60 and 1.0 mg a.i./L.  Mean measured concentrations were: ND (not detected at or above the limit of quantitation of 0.0700 mg a.i./L; control and solvent control), 0.081, 0.18, 0.28, 0.50, and 0.76 mg a.i./L. Mean measured concentrations were used for all toxicity determinations.

 

Fathead minnows used in the test were obtained from a commercial supplier and acclimated to test conditions for 14 days. All test organisms were in good condition at the beginning of the study. After 96 hours of exposure, the control organisms had an average wet weight (blotted dry) of 0.10 g (range 0.06 to 0.13 g) and they ranged in length from 2.2 to 2.8 cm. 

 

Exposure of fathead minnows to TMBPA resulted in a 96 hour median lethal concentration (LC50) of greater than 0.76 mg a.i./L, the highest concentration tested. The no-mortality concentration was 0.76 mg a.i./L, the highest dose tested in the study based on the limit of water solubility and the NOEC based on sub-lethal effects was 0.28 mg a.i./L.
