Drottar, K. R. and Krueger, H. O. (1998). Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD): A flow-through life-cycle toxicity test with the cladoceran (Daphnia magna). Report no.: 439A-108. Report date: 1998-04-30.
Drottar and Krueger (1998) is the key study for this endpoint. This study was conducted in accordance with recognised testing guidelines and under conditions of GLP and was allocated a reliability score of 1 according to the criteria set out by Klimisch et al. (1997).

The 21 day EC50 for survival and reproduction in Daphnia was greater than the highest dose tested (13.6 µg/L nominal; 11 µg/L measured, gamma diastereomer). This is equivalent to greater 17.2 µg of the commercial HBCDD product per litre of water. The 21 day NOEC in Daphnia for survival, reproduction and growth was 3.1 µg/L (measured). This value is approximately equal to the water solubility of the gamma diastereomer which typically makes up ≥ 80% of the commercial product and on which the test concentrations were based. Thus the 21 day NOEC is that of the gamma diastereomer rather than the commercial HBCDD product. Using the composition of the test substance, the 21 day NOEC is equivalent to 3.9 µg/L of the commercial product. The Maximum Accepted Toxicant Concentration was calculated to be 4.2 µg/L based on the measured concentration of the gamma diastereomer (3.1 µg/L) or 5.3 µg/L for the commercial product.
