Assessment of Pyrophoric Properties

The sample was handled and opened to air during testing at Chilworth Technology Ltd. No spontaneous ignition of the sample was observed. The sample is therefore not considered to be pyrophoric.

Executive summary:

A study was conducted to determine the ability of MEA-LAS to emit flammable gases upon contact with water following EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water)).

The method consists of three preliminary tests to determine if a violent reaction with water occurs and a final test to determine the quantity of gas generated.

No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the initial or final tests. The sample does not generate flammable gases in contact with water. The sample was handled and opened to air during testing. No spontaneous ignition of the sample was observed. The sample is therefore not considered to be pyrophoric.

 

MEA-LAS do not generate flammable gases in contact with water.

This flammability test is classified as acceptable, and satisfies the guideline requirements of the EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water).

The sample was filled into a mould 250 mm long with a triangular cross section of height 10 mm and width 20 mm. After tapping the mould, to settle down the powder, it is inverted onto an impervious non-combustible plate of low thermal conductivity. The mould was removed and the ignition source was placed at one end of the powder train for 2 minutes or until the powder ignites.


 


The sample melted but no flame or propagation was observed. As the sample was seen not to ignite, therefore no further testing was required.


MEA-LAS was classified as not highly flammable (A.10 (Flammability (Solids)).


This flammability test is classified as acceptable, and satisfies the guideline requirements of the EU Method A.10.
