The aquatic toxicity of fatty acids has been evaluated in studies on fish, daphnids and algae as well as microorganisms. Most of the studies were conducted with fatty acid homologues. Most tests are available for the soluble octanoic acid C8 (CAS 124 -07 -2), the azelaic acid C9 (CAS 123 -99 -9), the decanoic acid C10 (CAS 334 -48 -5) and the lauric acid C12 (CAS 143 -07 -7). In addition some studies were conducted with the insoluble pure homologues myristic acid C14 (CAS 544 -63 -8), palmic acid C16 (CAS 57 -10 -3) and stearic acid C18 (CAS 57 -11 -4) and certain mixtures.

As for fatty acids, C16 -22 (CAS 68002 -88 -0) no study on aquatic organisms is available, read-across is performed to studies conducted with stearic acid (CAS 57 -11 -4) and palmitic acid (CAS 57 -10 -3). As determined for CAS 68002 -88 -0 (see chapter "physical and chemical properties", stearic acid and palmatic acid are nearly insoluble in water (< 0.05 mg/L).

For stearic acid studies are available for fish (acute toxicity), aquatic invertebrates (acute toxicity) and toxicity on microorganisms. Palmitic acid was tested on daphnids (chronic toxicity) and algae (acute and chronic toxcitiy). For read-across key studies or studies used for a weight of evidence approach were used.

All considered studies available for stearic acid and palmitic acid which were used for read-across demonstrated the absence of acute and chronic effects on aquatic organisms. Thus no risk arising from fatty acids, C16 -22 (CAS 68002 -88 -0) for fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae, as well as microorganisms is expected
