Additional information

Tests performed with sodium chlorate can be used in this dossier, because the toxicity of the test substance is caused by the chlorate ion. In water and soil sodium and potassium are naturally present and the amounts added with the test substance are not considered to have an impact on the total concentration and on the test result, therefore the counter ion present is not relevant for the test result.

All PNECs are based on studies performed with sodium chlorate and on a molecular weight basis converted to potassium chlorate.

Conclusion on classification

The harmonised classification of the substance is Aquatic Chronic 2 according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation, ATP01).


This harmonised classification is not in agreement with the data presented in the dossier as the substance should not be classified instead of Aquatic Chronic 2 based on data from the dossier.


- The substance is not readily biodegradable,


- The lowest chronic EC50 value is higher than 1 mg/L (EC50= 15mg/L, Nitzschia closterium, marine algae; see section 6.1.5)


- The lowest chronic EC10/NOEC value is comprised between 1 and 10 mg/L (7d-NOErC = 10 mg/L, aquatic plants:Lemna minor, section 6.1.6)


As the substance is not readily biodegradable and the lowest NOEC is higher than 1 mg/L, the substance should not be classified for aquatic chronic hazard.
