Description of key information

Bowmer et al. determined the acute toxicity to algae of several lactate esters. Effects indicate that the alkyl lactates can be considered a homologous series. As such methyl lactate will be less toxic than ethyl lactate, which has an EbC50 of 2300 mg/L and an ErC50 of 3500 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
2 300 mg/L
