- The sample cup was filled with test substance up to the fill line and surface air bubbles were removed with a disposable pipette. The sample was placed on the heating mantle in a fume hood, the mantle was turned on and the temperature probe was inserted into the sample. The sample was initially heated at 14-17 ºC per minute, then once within 50 ºC of the expected flash point the heating rate was reduced to 5-6 ºC per minute. Once within 20 ºC of the expected flash point the fume hood was turned off and the gas flame was lit. The flame was swiped in a smooth continuous motion across a horizontal plane 2 mm above the top of the sample cup. The motion was repeated until a flash appeared on the sample surface, then the flash point temperature was recorded. The fume hood was immediately turned back on, and the gas and heating mantle were turned off.
