Results and discussion

Surface tension
Key result
Surface tension:
> 36.86 - < 40.43 N/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
90 vol%
Remarks on result:
other: The test item was considered to be surface active.

Any other information on results incl. tables

The surface tension of a test solution at 90% of the test item saturation solubility in water and at 20°C was between 36.86 and 40.43 mN/m.

The tensiometer could not perform five measurements as a constant value for the surface tension could not be reached.  This was considered to be due to the test item since proper performance of the instrument was demonstrated using double distilled water.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The OECD ring method was applied for the determination of the surface tension of Amines, N-tallow alkyltrimethylenedi-, C4-18-alkyl phosphates.

The surface tension of a test solution at 90% of the test item saturation solubility in water and at 20°C was between 36.86 and 40.43 mN/m. It is not possible to obtain a more accurate result due to the nature of the test item.

Though an accurate value for the surface tension of the test item cannot be obtained, the results obtained in this test are sufficient to conclude that the test item has to be considered to be surface active
Executive summary:

Introduction

The surface tension of the test substance was assessed using a method designed to meet the requirements of the following guidelines:

EC Guideline A.5. Surface Tension. March 04, 2016.

OECD Guideline 115. Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions.

Method

The surface tension of the test item was determined using the OECD harmonized ring method. The system consists of the following elements: model K11 tensiometer, platinum-iridium ring with a wire radius of 0.185 mm and a ring radius of 9.545 mm and a cylindrical glass vessel with an inside diameter of 45 mm.

All glassware was washed with hot chromosulfuric acid and subsequently with syrupy phosphoric acid, thoroughly rinsed in tap water and finally washed with double distilled water. The platinum-iridium ring was rinsed thoroughly in water, briefly immersed in chromosulfuric acid, washed with double distilled water and finally heated briefly above a methanol flame.

Results and Conclusion

The surface tension of a test solution at 90% of the test item, Amines, N-tallow alkyltrimethylenedi-, C4-18-alkyl phosphates, at saturation solubility in water and at 20°C was between 36.86 and 40.43 mN/m.  It is not possible to obtain a more accurate result due to the nature of the test item.

Though an accurate value for the surface tension of the test cannot be obtained, the results obtained in this test are sufficient to conclude that the test item has to be considered to be surface active.
