A condenser was used to collect any distillate from the substance, with a thermometer measuring the temperature of the test substance, and a second thermometer to monitor the condensate temperature. The sample was heated in air through a range of 150 ºC to 270 ºC.

At approximately 160 ºC, the sample was seen to ‘smoke’, with no evidence of distillation or ignition, and no temperature rise at the condenser. The sample was noted to be darker in colour. Heat was continually applied until the sample reached 270 ºC. The sample was not observed to ignite.

Conclusions:
The auto-ignition temperature of Fatty acids, C12-20 and C12-20-unsatd., 2-ethylhexyl esters cannot be determined as the substance begins to degrade before the autoignition point is reached.
