Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Hydrolysis and photodegeneration are not relevant for substance Fatty acids, C18-24, zinc salts.

Additional information

According to Annex VIII, section 9.2.2.1, column 2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006), information on hydrolysis is not required for biodegradable substances. Fatty acids, C18-24, zinc salts is produced from natural fatty materials, i.e. fatty acids (C18-24), and consists of approximately 90.5% natural fatty acids and 9.5% zinc. Fatty acids biodegrade readily according to the β-oxidation pathway including three major steps (activation in the cytosol, transport into mitochondria, β-oxidation until the entire chain is cleaved into acetyl CoA units). Thus, stable degradation products are not being formed in the environment. Furthermore, breaking down by photons is not expected to be relevant for Fatty acids, C18-24, zinc salts under typical environmental conditions as fatty acids moiety do not absorb light within a range of 290 to 700 nm, the range in which photolysis occur. The zinc moiety is an inorganic element and thus neither a subject to hydrolysis nor to photodegeneration. However, for water, information is available on the removal of metals from the water column (given under 5.6.). The removal from the water column was modeled referring to the EUSES model parameters and different conditions of pH. Zinc is removed by > 70% under the reference conditions for the EU regional waters (EUSES) (see section 5.6.: "removal from the water column").
