Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In accordance with Annex IX of the REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 toxicity studies in fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae have been conducted for the target substance, dioctyldimethyl ammonium chloride (C8DAQ). Studies for the read-across substances, didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) and DDACarbonate are also included in the dossier.

A reliable acute toxicity study with freshwater fish, Oncorhynchus mykiss for the test substance, C8DAQ is available, with a 96-hour LC50 (mortality) of 0.35 mg /L.  This value will be taken as the short-term toxicity in fish endpoint for C8DAQ.

A reliable early life stage toxicity with freshwater fish Fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) using the read-across substance N,N-Didecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium carbonate (DDACarbonate), provided a NOEC based on the most sensitive endpoint, growth, of 0.018 mg/L (18 µg/L).

A reliable acute toxicity study with the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna, and using the test substance C8DAQ is available with a 48-hour LC50 of 0.10 mg/L. This value will be taken as the short-term toxicity in aquatic invertebrates endpoint for C8DAQ.

A reliable long term toxicity study on the aquatic invertebrate, Daphnia magna, using the read across substance, N,N-Didecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium carbonate (DDACarbonate). The NOEC based on the most sensitive endpoint, growth, over a 21-day period, was determined at 27 µg AI/L and the LOEC 46 µg AI/L.

A reliable toxicity study with the freshwater alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and using the test substance, C8DAQ is available, with a 72-hour ErC50 (growth rate inhibition) of 0.122 mg/L. The NOEC (growth rate inhibition) was determined to be 0.010 mg/L. This value will be taken as the toxicity in aquatic algae endpoint for C8DAQ.

A reliable toxicity study with microorganisms for the read-across substance DDAC is available, with a 3-hour EC50 of 11 mg /L. This value will be taken as the toxicity to microorganisms endpoint for C8DAQ.

A reliable toxicity study with the freshwater plant, Lemna gibba, using the read across substance N,N-Didecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium carbonate (DDACarbonate) is available, with a 7-day EC50's of 0.057 mg A.I /L and a NOAEC of 0.01234 µg A.I /L (based on frond growth). These are based on an average of the day 0 and day 7 exposure concentrations due to a large drop in concentration over the duration of the study.
