Additional information

Quinic acid was tested in astatic Daphnia magna, Acute Immobilisation Test according to the OECD Guideline 202 for 48 h. Five nominal concentrations between 312.5 and 5000 mg/L were used. Daphnids did not show any adverse effects (including abnormal behaviour) in the controls and test concentrations. The NOEC of quinic acid is >= 5000 mg/L. Further, the aquatic toxicity of the read across substances salicylic acid and shikimic acid to invertebrates was determined experimentally and published by Henschel, 1997 and Sanderson, 2009. The EC50 of the read across substance salicylic acid for Daphnia magna was determined according to OECD 202. The EC50 of salicylic acidis 118 mg/l. The LC50 of the read across substance shikimic acid for Daphnia magna is 116 mg/L. The aquatic toxicity of quinic acid to algaeMicrocystis aeruginosawas also determined with an algal assay and published by Nakai, 2001. The determined NOEC of quinic acid for green algae is >10 mg/L. Quinic acids showed no inhibitory effects

Conclusion on classification

The experimentally determined EC50 of the read across substances salicylic acid and shikimic acid for invertebrates and algae is > 100 mg/L. Furthermore, the NOEC of quinic acid is > 10 mg/L. According to CLP 1272/2008 criteria for acute aquatic toxicity, EC50 >100 mg/L and NOEC > 1 mg/L quinic acid does not need to be classified.
