Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

An algal growth inhibition test was carried out according to OECD Guidelin 201 and EU Method C.3. Desmodesmus subspicatus was exposed to Ethylbenzene, manuf. of, distn. residues, distn. lights. in a static freshwater system over a period of 72 hours. Absorption of the test substance by the algal cells was observed. The EL50 was determined to be 6.2, 3.8 and 3.5 mg/L in respect to growth, yield and biomass. The No Observable Effect Loading Rate was 3.2, 1.0 and 1.0 mg/L in respect to growth, yield and biomass. The Lowest Observable Effect Loading Rate was 10, 3.2 and 3.2 mg/L qith respect to growth, yield and biomass.
- Water Solubility: slightly soluble
- Biodegradation in water: The test material attained 15 % degradation after 28 days and therefore cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable.

Additional information

A study was performed to assess the effect of Ethylbenzene, manuf. of, distn. residues, distn. lights. on the growth of the green algaDesmodesmus subspicatus. The alga were exposed to nominal loading rates of 1.0, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L (three replicate flasks per test concentrations and 6 replicated control flasks).

Exposure ofDesmodesmus subspicatusto Ethylbenzene, manuf. of, distn. residues, distn. lights. gave the following results based on nominal loading rates:

It is assumed that the Effective Loading rate (EL) is equivalent to the Effective Concentration (EC).

According Directive 67/548/EEC, AS-220 should be classified as R51/53: Toxic to aquatic organisms and May cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

According to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, Ethylbenzene, manuf. of, distn. residues, distn. lights. should be classified as Acute Category 2.
