No data are available for the parent compound pivaloyl chloride (CAS 3282-30-2). However, the parent compound rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water and forms pivalic acid (CAS 75-98-9) and HCl (CAS 7647-01-0). Therefore, the toxicity to aquatic green algae and cyanobacteria will be assessed based on the information available for the hydrolysis products pivalic acid and HCl.

Hydrolysis product pivalic acid:

The toxicity of the hydrolysis product pivalic acid was tested in a GLP compliant study performed according to OECD 201 with Raphidocelis subcapitata (previous name Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test organism (Exxon, 2003). The 72-h ErC50 was found to be 979 mg/L. The NOEC is reported to be 246 mg/L. The test item concentration was analytically verified and effect values are therefore based on nominal test concentrations.

 

Hydrolysis product HCL:

The toxicity of the hydrolysis product HCl was tested in a GLP study according to OECD 201 with R. subcapitata (previous name P. subcapitata (MITI, 1999; peer reviewed data: OECD SIDS, 2002). The 72-h ErC50 was 0.492 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 5.3). The NOEC was 0.097 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 6).
