The acute toxicity of dimethyl sulphide (Drottar 1999) was evaluated withOncorhynchus mykissin a study performed in accordance with OECD testing guideline 203 and GLP. The 96-hr LC50 value for rainbow trout exposed to dimethyl sulphide was 213 mg/L. The 96-hr NOEC is 118 mg/L.

In Boutonnet (1994), the acute toxicity of dimethyl sulphide was determined in Daphnia magna in accordance with OECD testing guideline 202 and GLP. The calculated 24-hr and 48-hr EC 50 were respectively 72 and 29 mg/L. This is supported by Drottar (1999), which was conducted according to OECD test guideline 202 and GLP. The 48-hour EC50 value forDaphnia magnaexposed to dimethyl sulphide was 81 mg/L.

 

The determination of the growth inhibition of the fresh algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata exposed to dimethyl sulphide for a duration of 72h was performed following the method OECD 201 and according to GLP. The study was performed using an algal suspension so that the initial cell concentration was equal to 1x10E4 cells/mL. The results show that EbC50 (based on biomass) and ErC50 (based on growth rate) are higher than 113.7 mg/L (based on initial measured concentration at T0). This is supported by Drottar (1999). In a 96 hour acute toxicity study, the cultures ofSelenastrum capricornutumwere exposed to dimethyl sulphide in accordance with the testing guideline OPPTS Number 850-5400 and with GLP. The 96-hr EC50 was 23 mg dimethyl sulphide/L. The 96-hr NOEC was 14 mg dimethyl sulphide/L.
