Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

- Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates: The EC50 (Daphnia magna) of the copper-glycine complex was determined to be 2.18 mg/L.

- Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria: (Read-across) The geometric LC/EC50 mean across three pH-ranges in Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was 0.139 mg Cu/L. This refers to 0.463 mg bis(glycinato)copper per Liter.

Additional information

Two independent studies have evaluated the toxicity of the copper-glycine complex to Daphnia magna. The results are in a close range: EC50 of 2.18 mg/L (Borgmann and Ralph, 1983) and LC50 of 2.129 mg/L (Khangarot et al. 1987). Both studies independently demonstrate that complexation of copper with glycine substantially reduces toxicity to Daphnia magna more than 20 -fold.

The result reported by Borgmann and Ralph (1983), EC50 2.18 mg/L in Daphnia magna, was chosen as key value for assessment because in the publication of Khangarot et al. (1987), no analytical monitoring was conducted.

The 72-h average EC50/LC50 of copper ions towards Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was 0.139 mg Cu/L as derived from a data collection of the respective European Union Risk Assessment Report. This refers to 0.463 mg bis(glycinato)copper per Liter.

The test item is considered to be very toxic to aquatic life according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
