Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
26 to 27 March 2019
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Justification for type of information:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method. The test substance is adequately characterised. Therefore, full validation applies.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Deviations:
no
Type of method:
ring method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
EssentÍal oil of Summer Savory/batch No. SSVI.ES.sample
Date of manufacture: 08.01.2019
Expration date of the batch: 08.01.2021
UVCB substance;
Purity test date: 18.01.2019
Key result
Surface tension:
49.5 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
900.4 mg/L
Conclusions:
The mean surface tension of an aqueous solution was determined as 49.5 mN/m at 20 °C.
According to EU A.5 criteria, as the result is below the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is considered to have surface active potential under the experimental conditions. However, since the structures of the constituents of the substance are not characteristic of true surfactants and it is not an intended use of the substance (i.e. not a desired property), this conclusion should be taken with caution.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of test item was determined according to EU method A.5 and OECD 115 under GLP.

The measurements were repeated until 6 measurements were within the limits of the stability criterion.

The surface tension of the test item in aqueous solution was determined as 50.01 ± 0.55 mN/m at 20°C.

The aqueous solution of the test item had a mean surface tension of 49.5 mN/m. As the surface tension was lower than 60 mN/m, the test item had surface-active properties.

Description of key information

The surface tension of the aqueous solution of the test item at 20 °C had a mean value of 49.5 mN/m.

The surface tension of the aqueous solution of the test item at 20 °C was lower than 60 mN/m. Substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m should be regarded as being surface-active materials

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to OECD 115/EU.A.5 method and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key value.
