Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt consists of a cerium cation and a benzenesulfonic acid  (4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivate) anion. In the assessment of the toxicity of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt to aquatic invertebrates, read-across to the assessment entities soluble cerium substances and benzenesulfonic acid (4-C10-13-sec-alkyl) anions is applied since the ions of benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt determine its fate and toxicity in the environment.

Regarding cerium toxicity in aquatic environments, a 48-h EC50 of 6.9 mg Ce/L was derived for D. magna. For benzenesulfonic acid (4-C10-13-sec-alkyl-derivates), a OECD 202 conform study with sodium 4-undecylbenzenesulfonate (CAS: 68411-30-3) as a representative substance resulted in a 48-h EC50 of 2.9 mg/L for D. magna.

Thus, benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt appears to have some potential  for acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates due to the toxicity of its dissociation products.
