- From November 18, 2016 to March 30, 2017
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Part I: Classification procedures, test methods and criteria relating to explosives of Class 1
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: OECD 113
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Remarks:
- The test laboratory is GLP-certified
- Key result
- Test series:
- UN Test series 1
- Method:
- UN Test 1 (c) (i): Time/pressure test
- Parameter:
- limiting impact energy (J)
- Value:
- 500
- Result:
- result is considered "-" (negative)
- Remarks on result:
- neither a test for propagation of detonation nor a test for sensitivity to detonative shock is required because the exothermic decomposition energy of the organic substance is less than 800 J/g
- Remarks:
- decomposition energy below -500 J/g
- Interpretation of results:
- other: CLP criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- Under the study conditions, due to the fact that the decomposition energy is below the threshold of -500 J/g no further tests had to be performed for the explosive properties.
- Executive summary:
A study was conducted to determine explosiveness potential of the test substance according to Recommendations on the Transport of dangerous goods: UN test series 1 and OECD Guideline 113. The determination of the thermal stability of the test substance was performed via Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The prepared crucibles (crucible with test substance and reference crucible) were placed in the DSC apparatus. For the test on thermal stability the crucibles were heated up from room temperature to 500 °C or 450 °C, respectively, with a heating rate of 3 K/min under air. For the determination of the thermal stability, three investigations were performed. Under the study conditions, due to the fact that the decomposition energy is below the threshold of -500 J/g no further tests had to be performed for the explosive properties (Möller, 2017).
Reference
In the glass crucibles, the test substance showed a broad endothermic effect in the temperature range of 120 - 320 °C, which could be cause by condensation effects. At approx. 320 °C a pressure raise could be observed and no further thermic effects up to the maximum temperature of 500 °C.
The measurement in the gold plated steel crucible showed also a broad endothermic signal in the temperature range of 150 - 350 °C. The crucible bursted at 430 °C.
Due to the fact that the decomposition energy is below the threshold of -500 J/g no further tests had to be performed for the explosive properties.
In the DSC-measurement no exothermic decomposition of the test substance could be observed up to 500 °C. Therefore, no further tests for explosive properties had to be performed. The test substance showed no explosive properties.
Description of key information
The explosiveness potential was determined according to Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and OECD Guideline 113 (Möller, 2017).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Explosiveness:
- non explosive
Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
UN Transport Regulation: The test substance does not have to be classified as explosive substance in class 1 according to the UN Transport Regulation.
GHS (CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008: Annex 1: 2.1):The test substance does not have to be classified as explosive substance according to GHS or CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.1, respectively.
