Data investigating the aquatic toxicity of Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6) are available for Short-term toxicity to fish, Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria. The toxicity control of the study on ready biodegradability was used to derive a value for Toxicity to microorganisms.

One study investigating the acute toxicity of Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6) to fish is available. The study, conducted according to OECD guideline 203, determined no toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility of the substance (LC50 (96 h) = 130 mg/L).

The available short-term toxicity test on aquatic invertebrates conducted with Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6) reported no immobilization of Daphnia magna up to the limit of water solubility.

The study investigating the toxicity of Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6) to aquatic algae, resulted in effects at concentrations > 20 mg/L. Based on algal growth a NOEC (72 h) of 20 mg/L was determined. The reported effect concentrations are higher than the determined water solubility of the test substance (WS: < 0.6µg - 10 mg/L at pH 6.3). Thus detrimental effects are not expected up to the limit of water solubility of Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6).

The toxicity control of the ready biodegradability study is used to derive a NOEC for the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms. In the degradation study, Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6) was found to be not toxic to aquatic microorganisms in the toxicity control. Hence the test item concentration of 100 mg/L can be used as NOEC.

Based on the results from the available studies, it can be concluded that Castor oil, ester with glycerol (CAS 68459-67-6) is not toxic to freshwater organisms up to the limit of the water solubility (WS < 0.6µg - 10 mg/L at pH 6.3).
