Description of key information

Appearance :

On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, test chemical was observed to be a organic off white granular solid.

Melting Point :

The melting point determination of test chemical was done as per the OECD guideline 102.  The method followed was according to Capillary/metal block. The Mean Melting temperature range was determined to be 83.3-85.5°C at 973.2 hPa.

Boiling Point :

The boiling point determination of test chemical was done as per the test OECD guideline 103.  The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The mean boiling point was determine to be 229.3°C at 968.0 hPa.

Density :

The density of test chemical was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02. The mean density of the test chemical was determined to be 0.9171 g/cm³ at 20 °C and 971.3 hPa.

Particle size distribution :

The particle size distribution of test chemical was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determine to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.

Vapour pressure :

Modified Grain method (Mean of Antoine and Modified Grain methods) was used to estimate the vapour pressure of the test chemical using MPBPVP v1.43 of EPI SUITE. The estimated vapour pressure of the test chemical at 25°C was 3.18 Pa.

Partition coefficient :

The partition coefficient(n-octanol/water) of test substance was determined as per the HPLC method (OECD Guideline-117). The Log Pow value was determined to be 3.564± 0.002 at 25°C.

Water solubility :

The water solubility determination of test chemical was done as per the OECD guideline 105 byspectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of test chemical in water was determined to be 1.5569 mg/L at 25°C. Thus test chemical is considered to be slightly soluble in water.

Surface tension :

The study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material.

Flash point :

The flash point determination of test chemical was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determined to be 96.3°C at 969.6hPa.

Auto flammability :

Test chemical ignites only when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that substance is flammable only at high temperature of about 950°C.

Flammability :

Test chemical does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Formaldehyde, oligomeric reaction products with phenol is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus test chemical was considered non-flammable.

Explosiveness :

the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.

Oxidising properties :

The study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

Stability in organic solvent:

The study does not need to be conducted because the stability of the substance is not considered to be critical.

Dissociation constant:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance has no ionic structure.

On the basis of other experimental data obtained from reliable source like handbook, melting point of the test chemical was determined to be ranges from  82 to 93°C.

On the basis of another experimental data obtained from secondary source like SciFinder, melting point of the test chemical was determined to be 94°C.

A test solution was prepared by accurately weighing 4 mg of test item and diluted with Acetonitrile up to 10 ml. Thus, the test solution concentration was 400 mg/l. The pH of test substance was 4.6.The reference substances were chosen according to estimated Pow range of the test substance and generalized calibration graph was prepared. The reference substances were 4-Acetylpyridine, Acetophenone, Benzophenone, 4-Methoxyphenol, Phenol, Benzene, Biphenyl, Methyl benzoate, Benzyl Benzoate, 1,4-Dichlorobenzene, 1,2,4 -Trichloro benzene, Chlorobenzene, Bromobenzene, 2,3-Dichloroaniline, Acetanilide, 2-Nitrophenol, Nitrobenzene, 2,6-Dichlorobenzonitrile, Diphenylamine, Cinnamyl alcohol, 4-Methylbenzyl alcohol, Benzyl alcohol, Phenoxyacetic acid, Cinnamic Acid, 3-Methylbenzoic acid, Dodecanoic acid, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, n-Butylbenzene, Naphthalene, Diphenyl ether, Allyl phenyl ether, DDT having Pow value ranging from 0.5 to 6.5. The Log Pow value of the test substance Formaldehyde, oligomeric reaction products with phenol was determined to be 3.564± 0.002 dimensionless at 25°C. On the basis of this value, test substance Formaldehyde, oligomeric reaction products with phenol can be considered to be hydrophobic in nature.
