Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Flammability:

2 -Pyrrolidone is a not easily flammable liquid (GESTIS, 2010).

Flammability, contact with water:

The test material does not contain structural components associated with pyrophoricity and/or flammability on contact with water mentioned in the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance, chapter R.7.1.10.3, page 123. Therefore, it can be concluded that the test material exhibit no risk for pyrophoricity and/or flammability on contact with water. No study is required.

Flammability, pyrophoric liquids:

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and the test material does not contain structural components associated with pyrophoricity mentioned in the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance, chapter R.7.1.10.3, page 123. Therefore, it can be concluded that the test material exhibit no risk for pyrophoricity.

Flammability, self-heating substances:

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is completely molten at 160 °C. The substance is a liquid.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

2-Pyrrolidone possess a slight fire potential, when exposed to heat or flame and can react with oxidizing materials (Sax, N.I., 1979).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available studies do not reveal 2 -pyrrolidone to be a flammable liquid. As such classification is not warranted according to the criteria of EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.

Based on the physical state, the structural elements and the melting point the substance has neither to be classified as flammable in contact with water, nor as pyrophoric liquid, nor as self-heating substance.
